Portland PC Users Group General Meeting Our next General Meeting is Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 at 7:15pm.
We Meet at the
Gateway Elks Lodge PPCUG General Meeting – Featured Speaker
"Portland Gets WiMAX - Wireless 4G Internet "
This new technology could change the way you use the Internet. Portland is one of the first cities in the U.S. to get this new wireless 4G technology. With WiMAX you have high speed wireless Internet nearly anywhere in the Portland-Vancouver metro area. But why stop there? With an unlimited data plan, you can use it at home too. Or just use it at home with a fixed wireless modem and skip cable or DSL entirely. Download speeds are comparable to DSL.
The new WiMAX technology will be built into notebook PCs and presumably handheld devices. Since the distance it reaches is much greater than WiFi, it will change the way we use the Internet away from home. WiFi at coffee shops won’t go away for a while, but it may become unnecessary. WiMAX is the 802.16e specification and reaches 4-8 miles in practice, although 30 miles range is claimed by engineers. Don’t confuse this with the old Portland Metro WiFi. This is a different technology and much better. Antennas are on cell phone towers and radiates in similar ways
Now marketed as Clear, the Clearwire Company received 3.2 billion investment dollars last year from Comcast, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Google and Bright House Networks. With these partnerships and this financing, the company obviously has big plans. Portland is the second or third metro area in the U.S. to get this service. www.clear.com
Gina Samson, store manager of the Clear Uptown store at 29 NW 23rd Place in Portland, 503-241-6551, is the guest speaker. She states “Our mission is Clear: to give you super fast Internet everywhere. So whether you’re at home, in a car on the tram of even riding in a ferris wheel, you can always be connected to your life online.”
